Derek Stirewalt is a Professor in the Translational Science and Therapeutics Division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and an Associate Professor in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at the University of Washington. He serves as Director of both the Fred Hutch/UW Hematopoietic Diseases Repository and the Co-operative Center of Excellence in Hematology Hematopoietic Cell Procurement and Processing Services. Dr. Stirewalt has been an active member of Fred Hutch's transplant program for over 20 years and is involved with the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Guideline Committee for Senior Adult Oncology.
Education:
- M.D., University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1992)
- Residency, University of North Carolina
- Fellowship in Hematology-Oncology, University of Washington
Dr. Stirewalt's research focuses on the molecular changes in blood stem cells during aging and their relationship to leukemia development. His work specifically examines FLT3 and NPM1 mutations in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), identifying novel biomarkers for hematopoietic malignancies, and understanding how aging contributes to cancer development. He employs cutting-edge technologies including next-generation sequencing, proteomics, and transfection/transduction models to analyze DNA, RNA, and protein expression patterns.
Analysis of Dr. Stirewalt's recent publications reveals a strong focus on AML molecular biology, particularly regarding FLT3 and NPM1 mutations, risk stratification, and aging-related changes in hematopoietic malignancies. His research spans basic science investigations of molecular pathways to clinical applications in risk prediction and treatment response. The publications demonstrate collaborative work with major cancer research groups including SWOG, Children's Oncology Group, and the National Cancer Institute.
Leadership Roles:
- Director, Fred Hutch/UW Hematopoietic Diseases Repository
- Director, Co-operative Center of Excellence in Hematology Hematopoietic Cell Procurement and Processing Services
- Member, NCCN Guideline Committee for Senior Adult Oncology
Dr. Stirewalt has received continuous research funding supporting his investigations into AML biology and aging. His laboratory works closely with multiple internal and external investigators at the National Cancer Institute, Southwest Oncology Group, and Children's Oncology Group. The Fred Hutch/UW Hematopoietic Diseases Repository and CCEH resources he directs provide critical samples to researchers nationwide.
Dr. Stirewalt leads a research team focused on understanding the molecular basis of hematopoietic malignancies, particularly how aging affects disease development and treatment response in AML. His laboratory has made significant contributions to recognizing FLT3 internal tandem duplications and NPM1 mutations as key prognostic factors in AML.
