Tracy Kivell is a paleoanthropologist and Director of the Department of Human Origins at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. She holds a PhD and MA in Biological Anthropology from the University of Toronto (2007 and 2002, respectively). Her research focuses on the evolution of primate skeletal morphology, particularly the hand and locomotion, integrating analyses of bone structure, biomechanics, and fossil evidence. Tracy has held roles including Professor of Biological Anthropology at the University of Kent (2013–2023), and postdoctoral positions at Duke University and the Max Planck Institute. She leads interdisciplinary projects on hominin fossils like Australopithecus sediba and Homo naledi, exploring hand function and behavior through microCT scanning and musculoskeletal modeling. Her work bridges paleontology, anatomy, and ecology, with key contributions to understanding early human evolution. Notable grants include an ERC Consolidator Grant (2019–2024) and an ERC Starting Grant (2014–2019). Tracy has supervised over a dozen PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, advancing studies in primate locomotion, bone adaptation, and tool use. Publications span topics from Homo floresiensis morphology to gorilla positional behavior, reflecting her focus on integrating fossil and living primate data. Her research highlights the interplay between skeletal form and functional adaptation across species and evolutionary timelines.
