Amanda Oehlert is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Marine Geosciences at the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science, University of Miami. She leads the Oehlert Research Group, focusing on integrating sedimentological, geochemical, and geobiological approaches to study Earth's biogeochemical cycles and environmental changes. Her work emphasizes marine carbonate formation (e.g., ichthyocarbonate from fish), extreme environments like the Atacama Desert, and microbialite systems such as those in Shark Bay and the Bahamas.
Research interests include microbial mat detoxification processes, carbonate preservation in sediments, and the role of fish-produced carbonates in the global carbon cycle. She has contributed to studies on saline lake stratification, organic matter coatings on carbonates, and arsenic enrichment in microbial mats. Her group collaborates globally, with projects in the Dead Sea, Fiji, and the Chagos Archipelago.
Notable achievements include securing grants like the Don R. Boyd Memorial grant and mentoring students in interdisciplinary research. Her lab emphasizes fieldwork, isotopic analyses, and microscopy to address questions about carbon cycling, mineral formation, and paleoenvironmental reconstruction.
Publications span journals like PloS One, Chemical Geology, and Global Biogeochemical Cycles, with datasets openly shared for collaborative research. The group actively engages in outreach, training future scientists, and advancing understanding of Earth’s dynamic systems.
