Prof. Dr. Jörn Peckmann is a Professor of Geology at the Department of Earth System Sciences, University of Hamburg. Previously, he held academic positions at the University of Vienna (2010–2015) and the University of Bremen (2005–2010, 2002–2005). His research focuses on geobiology, mineral authigenesis, and geomicrobiology of ancient environments, with current projects examining methane seeps, microbialite formation, phosphorite authigenesis, and serpentinization processes.
His work spans sedimentology, stratigraphy, and biogeochemical cycles, particularly in marine settings. He has contributed to understanding the geochemical and isotopic fingerprints of methane seepage, microbial sulfate reduction, and carbon burial mechanisms. His publications frequently address the interplay between geological processes and microbial life in extreme environments.
Prof. Peckmann serves as an Associate Editor for Palaios and Terra Nova, and is on the editorial boards of several journals. He can be contacted via joern.peckmann@uni-hamburg.de at the University of Hamburg.
