Pieter Visscher is a Professor of Marine Sciences at the University of Connecticut. His research focuses on astrobiology and geomicrobiology, particularly studying microbial ecosystems such as microbial mats and microbialites as analogs for early Earth and extraterrestrial life. He investigates processes like carbonate precipitation, sulfur and arsenic cycling, and biogeochemical interactions in extreme environments. His work spans marine, hypersaline, and high-altitude ecosystems, with field sites including the Bahamas, Chile, and Australia.
Education: Ph.D. in Microbial Ecophysiology and Geochemistry from the University of Groningen, Netherlands, and M.S. in Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Law from the same institution.
Research interests include microbialite formation mechanisms, biosignature preservation, and the role of microorganisms in sedimentary processes. His studies integrate fieldwork, laboratory experiments, and collaborations with institutions like Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Petrobras. He mentors students in marine geology, biogeochemistry, and microbial ecology.
Key projects involve microbialite conservation in Shark Bay (Australia), subsalt oil reservoir collaborations, and protist distribution in deep-sea trenches. His articles explore topics like microbialite mineralization, viral roles in lithification, and exopolymeric substances' influence on carbonate precipitation.
Students advised include Quinne Murphy, Laura Baumgartner, and Kim Gallagher, among others. His research is supported by grants from NASA, NSF, and international partnerships. He leads the Geomicrobiology workgroup, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to understanding Earth's microbial history and astrobiological potential.
