Dr. habil. Andy Sombke is a Group Leader at the Medical University of Vienna, Center for Anatomy and Cell Biology. He previously held research positions at the University of Vienna (2018-2022), Universität Greifswald (PostDoc, 2011-2018), and University of Rostock (Research Associate, 2005-2006). His research focuses on the evolutionary morphology of sensory and processing systems in arthropods, particularly myriapods, with a DFG-funded project on transformation of centipede ultimate legs.
- Education: PhD in Zoology (University of Greifswald, 2012), University of Rostock (undergraduate).
His work integrates neuroanatomy, venomics, and comparative sensory systems, utilizing techniques like immunohistochemistry, microCT, and X-ray tomography. Recent studies examine autophagic flux in muscular dystrophy, RNA editing in immune response, and venom system evolution.
Scientific Awards:
- Lothar Kämpfe-Publikationspreis (2011)
Collaborations span institutions in Germany, Austria, and international teams. His publications (over 100) cover arthropod neurobiology, terrestrial adaptation, and taxonomic revisions in myriapods and related taxa.
