Sean Gavan is a Senior Lecturer in Health Economics at the Manchester Centre for Health Economics, within the School of Health Sciences, Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health at The University of Manchester. He leads the economics programme for the Innovate Manchester Advanced Therapy Centre Hub (iMATCH) to support the implementation of advanced cell and gene therapies in healthcare systems, and previously delivered the health economics programme for the Medical Research Council's Precision Medicine Consortium MASTERPLANS. Dr. Gavan holds a PhD in Economics, an MSc in Health Economics (Distinction), an MSc in Economics (Distinction), and a BA (Hons) in Economics for Business (First Class). He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2019) and maintains active professional memberships including the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR), International Health Economics Association (iHEA), European Health Economics Association (EuHEA), and UK Health Economists' Study Group (HESG). He previously served as President of the ISPOR Student Chapter at The University of Manchester (2015-17). His research focuses on applying economic analyses to inform decision-making for health technology assessment and health policy, with specializations in cost-effectiveness analysis of health technologies, economics of precision medicine, and early economic evaluation of health technologies. Dr. Gavan's work demonstrates strong connections to rheumatology, genomics, and advanced therapies, with particular emphasis on translating research into practical healthcare applications and policy recommendations. Dr. Gavan's recent publications reveal a consistent research trajectory examining the economic evaluation of diagnostic tools and treatment approaches in rheumatoid arthritis, precision medicine applications, and health technology assessment methodologies. His scholarly output shows increasing engagement with advanced cell and gene therapies, digital health monitoring solutions, and the economic implications of precision medicine implementation in healthcare systems, with numerous publications appearing in high-impact journals through 2025. Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2019) Dr. Gavan actively supervises PhD students across multiple projects and teaches key postgraduate modules including 'Economics of Genomics and Precision Medicine' (BIOL67372) and 'Healthcare Economics' (ECON60432). He has served as PhD co-supervisor for Leonie Penner, Yubo Wang, Anna Donten, and currently Talha Khan-Israeel, with research topics spanning anticoagulant prescribing economics, breast cancer treatments, precision medicine in rheumatology, and myopia interventions. His research has been supported by significant projects including the MASTERPLANS consortium (2015-2021) and the Interop Meds benefits work project (2022-2023). As Director of the MEED Research Forum (Methods for the Economic Evaluation of Diagnostics, Digital, Data and Devices) and member of the Editorial Board for PharmacoEconomics, Dr. Gavan maintains leadership roles in advancing health economics methodology. He leads the external research seminar programme at the Manchester Centre for Health Economics and collaborates extensively with colleagues including Prof. Katherine Payne, Prof. Anne Barton, and Prof. Ian Bruce, with research contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and wellbeing.
