Born in Saigon, Vietnam, he came to the United States as a refugee at age two and grew up in Hartford, Connecticut. A recipient of the 2019 MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship, Vuong is celebrated for his work exploring the refugee experience, intergenerational trauma, and queer identity through both poetry and fiction. His research interests span poetry, fiction writing, Vietnamese-American literature, LGBTQ+ literature, trauma studies, and the refugee experience. Vuong's work is deeply influenced by his Buddhist faith and his family's history as refugees. His writing often incorporates Vietnamese oral storytelling traditions while experimenting with the English language, creating a unique poetic voice that addresses complex themes of identity, desire, and survival. Vuong's publications include the New York Times bestselling novel On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous (2019), the poetry collection Night Sky with Exit Wounds (2016), and the chapbooks No (2013) and Burnings (2010). His work frequently explores the intersections of war trauma, refugee experience, and queer identity, often drawing from personal and family history. Among his numerous awards are the T.S. Eliot Prize, Whiting Award, Thom Gunn Award, and Forward Prize for Best First Collection. He has also received fellowships from prestigious organizations including the Poetry Foundation, Lannan Foundation, Civitella Ranieri Foundation, and the Academy of American Poets.
