Dr. Cristina Fornaguera Puigvert is a Full Professor at the Department of Bioengineering within the School of Engineering at IQS (Universitat Ramon Llull), holding the prestigious ICREA Academia award. She coordinates the Degree in Biomedical Sciences since 2022 and leads the GEMAT (Materials Engineering) research group, which operates in three main areas: development of new functional materials, surface engineering, and biomaterials. Her educational background includes a PhD in Pharmacy (2015, UB), a Master's degree in Respiratory Medicine (UB/UPF), and a Graduate degree in Biotechnology (2010, UAB). She has served as a Visiting researcher at i3S, Porto, Portugal (2021) and has been a Hired Professor Doctor since 2018. Dr. Fornaguera's research focuses on polymeric nanosystems for biomedical applications, with particular emphasis on designing advanced drug delivery systems, non-viral gene therapy vectors, mRNA vaccines, and novel immunotherapies for cancer treatment. Her work spans from fundamental nanomaterial science to clinical applications, with significant contributions to vectorizing nanoformulations to specific organs and developing smart nanoparticles for in situ immune cell engineering. She has pioneered approaches for crossing physiological barriers including mucoses, epithelial barriers, and the blood-brain barrier. Her extensive publication record demonstrates consistent innovation across multiple therapeutic areas, with recent work particularly focused on cancer immunotherapy, vaccine development (including mRNA vaccines for lung cancer and melanoma), and nanotherapies for liver conditions. Her research bridges nanotechnology with clinical applications, showing particular strength in translating laboratory discoveries into potential therapeutic solutions for cancer, inflammatory diseases, and vaccine delivery. ICREA Academia award recipient h-index of 20 with over 3,000 citations Principal investigator on numerous research projects including CHIMERNA, TumorOut, ZwiRNA, LIVENANO, and COVINANOVAX As an academic leader, Dr. Fornaguera mentors a large team of researchers including multiple postdoctoral researchers, PhD candidates, and MSc students. She has secured substantial research funding for projects related to mRNA vaccines, cancer nanotherapy, and biomaterials development. Her GEMAT research group has been instrumental in developing innovative approaches for cancer treatment, vaccine delivery, and biomaterial applications, with several projects reaching preclinical stages. The group actively participates in international collaborations and has contributed significantly to the development of the Spanish COVID-19 vaccine.
