Margherita Guglielmina CASSIA is an Associate Professor of Roman History at the Department of Humanities, University of Catania, where she has been a confirmed faculty member since 2005. Her academic career began with a PhD in Ancient History and a research grant in Roman History, both completed at the University of Catania. She holds National Scientific Qualification as both Associate and Full Professor in Ancient History, underscoring her scholarly recognition. Her office is located in the Former Benedictine Monastery, Room 232, and she is actively involved in teaching, research, and academic administration. Research Interests: Her research spans a broad range of topics in Roman history, with a focus on urbanism, social and economic structures, medicine, gender, and epigraphy. She investigates regional variations in the Roman Empire, particularly in Anatolia (Cappadocia, Pontus) and the Mediterranean islands (Sicily, Malta). Her work explores the interplay between imperial power and local societies, the role of medicine and healthcare in antiquity, slavery and social mobility, and the didactics of ancient history. She integrates epigraphic, literary, and archaeological sources to reconstruct the socio-economic and cultural dynamics of the ancient world. Publication Trends: Her recent publications reveal a strong thematic consistency centered on Cappadocia, Sicily, and the role of medicine in Late Antiquity. She examines topics such as beasts of burden in Anatolia, illness and magic, married medical couples, and the linguistic reflections in Strabo. Her work demonstrates a methodological rigor that combines philological analysis with socio-economic and cultural history, often drawing on epigraphic evidence from diverse regions of the Roman Empire.
