Nathan Dietz is an Associate Research Professor and Research Director at the Do Good Institute, affiliated with the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland. He holds roles as Director of the Do Good Lab and has been with the university since 2017. His research focuses on social capital, volunteering, charitable contributions, civic engagement, and social entrepreneurship. Prior to academia, he held senior research roles at the Urban Institute and the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). Dr. Dietz earned a Ph.D. and M.A. in Political Science from the University of Rochester and a B.A. in Political Science and Mathematical Methods from Northwestern University. His educational background underscores his expertise in policy analysis and quantitative methods. His research interests include analyzing the interplay between social networks and generosity, evaluating nonprofit management practices, and understanding barriers to civic participation. He has authored/co-authored numerous publications in journals like Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly and American Journal of Community Psychology . Recent work highlights include studies on post-pandemic volunteer engagement challenges, state-level charity regulations, and generational shifts in charitable behaviors. He teaches PLCY 688F: State, Local and Nonprofit Financial Management and chairs the School’s Faculty Diversity Committee. Professional milestones include leading evaluations of AmeriCorps programs and serving as Principal Investigator for the Generosity Commission. His interdisciplinary approach bridges academic research, policy, and practical nonprofit operations.
