Dr. Michelle Twali is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Psychology at New York University's Steinhardt School. Her research focuses on intergroup conflict, collective victimization, and interventions in refugee and host communities. She holds a Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Clark University, an M.Sc. in Developmental Psychology from the University of Utah, and a B.A. (Hons) in Psychology and Political Science from the University of Ghana. Prior to NYU, she completed postdoctoral fellowships at Innovation for Poverty Action and Princeton University. Her work examines how historical and sociopolitical contexts shape psychological needs of marginalized groups and develops context-relevant interventions. She has consulted with NGOs on projects such as a mass media intervention in South Sudan and a micro-enterprise program in Kenya. Her research has been funded by Russell Sage Foundation and the Spencer Foundation. Dr. Twali’s research spans diverse global contexts, including the U.S., Uganda, Kenya, and South Sudan. Key themes include collective victimhood, power dynamics in racial oppression, and reconciliation processes post-genocide. She advocates for interventions grounded in social psychological theory to address real-world conflicts.
