Douglas Lind serves as a Professor in the Department of Philosophy within Virginia Tech's College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, where his academic work centers on the philosophy of law, legal reasoning, and judicial decision-making, with secondary emphases on environmental ethics and law. His research is deeply rooted in Ludwig Wittgenstein's later philosophy and classical pragmatism, currently focused on developing a comprehensive pragmatist jurisprudence. Key projects examine the evolution of legal meaning, creation of doctrines like the tort maxim res ipsa loquitur , and the inventive role of legal fictions in jurisprudence. Lind also directs the Tribal Law Exchange, facilitating cross-cultural legal knowledge sharing with Indigenous communities. Complementing his scholarly output, Professor Lind regularly conducts international workshops on logic and judicial methodology for legal professionals across the United States, Australia, and New Zealand, demonstrating applied engagement with the legal community beyond academic boundaries.
