Sierd Cloetingh is a University Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at Utrecht University, specializing in tectonics and geodynamics. With over 388 peer-reviewed publications (21,094 citations, h-index 79), he has established himself as a leading figure in Earth sciences. He currently chairs the European Regional Coordinating Committee of the International Lithosphere Programme and has held numerous prestigious leadership roles including President of Academia Europaea and Vice-President of the European Research Council. Professor Cloetingh's research focuses on the intricate relationships between deep Earth processes and surface topography, with particular emphasis on lithosphere dynamics, continental deformation, and basin evolution. His work integrates geological, geophysical, and modeling approaches to understand the complex interplay between tectonic forces, climate, and surface processes over geological time scales. His research has significant implications for understanding geohazards, geothermal energy resources, and the evolution of continental landscapes. Analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent focus on coupled surface-deep Earth processes, with increasing attention to climate and energy-related societal challenges. His work spans diverse geographical regions including Europe, Africa, and the Arctic, demonstrating both regional specialization and global applicability of his theoretical frameworks. The TOPO-EUROPE program, which he chaired, represents a major collaborative effort to integrate these multi-scale processes. Honorary doctorates from six European universities Chevalier de Légion d'Honneur (2005) Knight of the Royal Order of the Netherlands Lion (2014) Membership in seven national academies including the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences Professor Cloetingh has supervised nearly 80 PhD students from 18 different nationalities, demonstrating his significant contribution to training the next generation of Earth scientists. His leadership extends to major collaborative research programs including TOPO-EUROPE and the International Lithosphere Programme. His work on geothermal energy resources, particularly through the European GEISER project, demonstrates his commitment to applying fundamental Earth science research to societal challenges. Based at the Earth Simulation Lab at Utrecht University, Professor Cloetingh leads research that integrates numerical modeling with observational data to understand lithospheric processes. His work with the TOPO-EUROPE consortium represents one of the most comprehensive efforts to link deep Earth dynamics with surface processes across continental Europe.
