James Brander is a Professor Emeritus and Asia-Pacific Professor in International Business and Public Policy at the Sauder School of Business, University of British Columbia. He holds a BA from the University of British Columbia (1975) and MA/PhD from Stanford University (1979). His research focuses on the economics of innovation, international trade, industrial organization, and entrepreneurial finance. Notable work includes studies on intellectual property rights, venture capital dynamics, and spatial agglomerations of startups. Brander has held leadership roles such as President of the Canadian Economics Association (2009-2010) and Editor of the Canadian Journal of Economics (1997-2001). His research spans decades, addressing topics like trade policy, Easter Island's deforestation, and hockey league wage patterns. He has collaborated with institutions globally and maintains an active academic presence through publications and conferences.
