Robert H Brown is a Professor at UMass Chan Medical School, holding positions in the T.H. Chan School of Medicine Departments of Neurology, Genetic and Cellular Medicine, NeuroNexus Institute, and RNA Therapeutics Institute, as well as multiple departments in the Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences including Neuroscience and the MD/PhD Program. Dr. Brown earned his BA in Biophysics from Amherst College, his MD from Harvard Medical School, and his DPhil in Neurophysiology from the University of Oxford. Dr. Brown's research laboratory has focused extensively on the identification of gene defects that elucidate the molecular pathogenesis of neuromuscular diseases, particularly amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease), muscular dystrophy, adrenoleukodystrophy, hereditary neuropathy, and hyperkalemic periodic paralysis. His work has led to the creation of mouse and cell-based models of these disorders, which have facilitated the study of therapeutic strategies using conventional small molecule approaches and new modalities such as inhibitory RNAi. His recent publications demonstrate a continued focus on ALS pathogenesis and therapeutic development, with particular emphasis on SOD1 and C9ORF72-related mechanisms. Analysis of Dr. Brown's recent publications reveals a strong focus on developing targeted therapies for ALS, particularly through gene silencing approaches like antisense oligonucleotides and RNA interference. His work spans from basic molecular mechanisms to preclinical models and clinical trials, demonstrating a translational research approach that bridges laboratory discoveries with potential patient applications. The research shows particular interest in SOD1-related ALS, C9ORF72 expansion disorders, and the development of biomarkers to track disease progression and treatment response. Donna M. and Robert J.
