Professor Graeme Swindles is a leading academic in Earth System Science at Queen's University Belfast, where he holds the position of Professor of Physical Geography. His research focuses on climate change, peatland dynamics, and Arctic ecosystems, with a particular emphasis on understanding past, present, and future environmental interactions. He is also a Research Professor (Adjunct) at Carleton University, Canada. Swindles' educational background includes a BSc from Durham University and a PhD from Queen's University Belfast. He has held various academic roles, including Associate Professor at the University of Leeds and Lecturer at the University of Bradford. His expertise spans interdisciplinary fields like geochemistry, limnology, and numerical modeling using R. Research interests include peatland biogeochemistry, climate change adaptation, and the use of quantitative methods for environmental reconstructions. Key achievements include the Lewis Penny Medal from the Quaternary Research Association and contributions to over 180 peer-reviewed publications. He currently leads major research projects, such as 'Soil to Sea: The Fate of Terrestrial Permafrost Carbon in Aquatic Systems' and 'PIPIPES: Pollutants in Peatlands.' Swindles' work addresses UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly climate action and life on land. His research integrates paleoenvironmental data with modern observations to inform policy and conservation strategies for vulnerable ecosystems.
