Professor Danny Feltham is a leading academic in climate physics and polar oceanography at the University of Reading's Department of Meteorology. He holds the position of Professor of Climate Physics and leads the research group in sea ice and polar oceanography. His work integrates mechanics, thermodynamics, and numerical modeling to understand sea ice dynamics and its role in global climate systems. Feltham earned his BSc in Physics from Durham University (1993) and a PhD in Fluid Dynamics and Thermodynamics of Sea Ice from Cambridge University (1998). Prior to joining Reading in 2012, he held roles at University College London, including Academic Fellow, Lecturer, and Reader in Polar Oceanography.
His research focuses on sea ice thermodynamics, dynamics, and rheology, with a particular interest in improving sea ice models for climate projections. Current projects include the UK Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling (CPOM), Arctic climate studies, and Antarctic sea ice dynamics. Feltham supervises doctoral students, such as Penny Coulthard, and collaborates internationally on interdisciplinary projects. He is also an editor of The Cryosphere and contributes to the NERC Joint Marine Modelling Programme governance.
Key contributions include advancing sea ice parameterizations, melt pond modeling, and the impact of oceanic/atmospheric heat transport on ice cover. His work bridges theory, field observations, and numerical simulations to address critical climate questions, such as Arctic ice-free projections and sea ice's role in Earth's albedo and ocean circulation.
