Tony L. Goldberg is a Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Wisconsin–Madison. His research focuses on the ecology, evolution, and epidemiology of infectious diseases, particularly zoonotic and emerging pathogens, using interdisciplinary approaches that bridge biological and social sciences. DVM, 2000, University of Illinois MS, Epidemiology, 2000, University of Illinois Ph.D., Anthropology, 1996, Harvard University B.A., Biology & English, 1990, Amherst College His research interests include infectious disease ecology, zoonoses, virology, conservation medicine, and the One Health paradigm. He leads the Goldberg Lab, which investigates pathogen transmission across wildlife, domestic animals, and humans, with field sites in Africa and North America. The lab combines field surveillance, molecular biology, genomics, and ecological modeling to understand health and disease in dynamic ecosystems. The recent publications (2023–2025) reflect a strong focus on viral discovery and dynamics in diverse hosts—particularly freshwater mussels, primates, dogs, bats, and fish. Key themes include cross-species transmission, the impact of human activities on pathogen spread, and the use of advanced molecular tools like CRISPR and metabarcoding for pathogen detection. His work spans disciplines including virology, conservation, public health, and veterinary medicine, contributing significantly to understanding emerging infectious diseases. Tony Goldberg has mentored numerous PhD and DVM/PhD students, many of whom now hold academic, research, or public health positions. His lab fosters collaboration across institutions and countries, particularly in Uganda, where much of the field research is conducted. He is actively involved in advising and research grants, though specific grant details are not listed. His lab includes current PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and research specialists working on diverse projects in veterinary and microbial sciences. The Goldberg Lab operates from the Biomedical Sciences Laboratory at UW–Madison, integrating laboratory and field-based research to study health at the intersection of animals, people, and ecosystems.
