Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sezgi Somuncu is an academic staff member at Sakarya University, Faculty of Science, Department of Biology. Her research focuses on environmental toxicology in aquatic organisms, particularly examining pesticide effects on zebrafish (Danio rerio) and freshwater snails (Lymnaea stagnalis). She teaches courses like Ecology, Toxicity Tests, and Graduation Project.
- Education: PhD in Environmental Toxicology (Ege University, 2018), MSc in Aquatic Toxicology (Sakarya University, 2012), BSc in Zoology (Celal Bayar University, 2009)
Research Interests:
- Environmental toxicology of pesticides and industrial chemicals
- Histopathological and developmental effects on aquatic organisms
- Comparative anatomy of vertebrate integumentary systems
- Ecotoxicology of freshwater ecosystems
Key Research Trends: Her publications from 2015-2025 emphasize organ-specific toxicity (gills, liver, gonads) in model species like zebrafish and snails, using histopathological, biometric, and developmental analyses to assess pollutants like acrolein, triclosan, and neonicotinoids.
Administrative Roles:
- Department Head Assistant (2024)
- Quality Committee Member (2022)
- Section Editor, Sakarya University Journal of Science (2024)
Advising and Research Projects: She supervises undergraduate and graduate theses on aquatic toxicology and participates in funded projects like Developmental toxicity of thiamethoxam in Lymnaea stagnalis (2025). Her work appears in journals such as Environmental Toxicology and Pharmacology and Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology.
