Dr. Joris Koene is an Associate Professor in the Ecology & Evolution department at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His research focuses on reproduction in simultaneous hermaphrodites, particularly in freshwater snails like Lymnaea stagnalis and land snails like Cornu aspersum. He investigates sperm competition, sexual conflict, and integrates molecular, physiological, and behavioral approaches. His work contributes to understanding hermaphroditism as a reproductive strategy.
Research Interests: His lab uses techniques such as molecular phylogeny, paternity analysis, and neuroanatomy to study sexual selection dynamics. Key models include Lymnaea stagnalis for translational neuroscience and Cornu aspersum for studying love darts. He explores how environmental factors (e.g., light, pollutants) and physiological mechanisms influence reproductive behaviors.
Publications: Recent work includes studies on anxiety-like behavior in molluscs, fluoxetine exposure effects, and the role of PACAP in invertebrate physiology. These reflect his interdisciplinary approach bridging ecology, neurobiology, and evolutionary biology.
Awards:
- Buschbaum Prize (2005)
- Dutch Zoology Prize (2008)
- Educational Innovation Award (2024)
- Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award (2010)
- Jessup-McHenry Award (1999)
Teaching: He teaches courses like Behavioral Biology and Plant & Animal Physiology, integrating his research into education.
Labs/Teams: Active in networks like SHOW (Simultaneously Hermaphroditic Organism Workshop) and WO&MEN (Gender Equality Network), promoting collaboration and diversity in science.
