Gülbanu Kaptan is an Associate Professor in Behavioural Decision Making at Leeds University Business School, University of Leeds, where she has been a faculty member since 2014. Her work bridges behavioural science, environmental challenges, and food systems, with a focus on risk perception, communication, and behaviour change. She has held leadership roles including Interim Head of the Decision Research Group and Academic Lead for the LUBS Workload Allocation Management System. Her research is centered on applying behavioural science to societal challenges such as food waste, food safety, and climate change impacts on agriculture. She investigates consumer acceptance of novel foods, psychological drivers of hygiene behaviours, and resilience in food supply chains. Her interdisciplinary approach involves collaboration with academic and non-academic stakeholders across the UK and internationally. Dr. Kaptan has secured significant funding from UKRI (ESRC, BBSRC), Swiss National Science Foundation, EU-FP7, and Research England. Her projects include citizen science initiatives on plant breeding, food waste reduction post-COVID-19, and policy barriers to food upcycling. She is actively involved in policy advisory roles with the European Commission’s Consumer Food Waste Forum and the FAO’s Working Group on Behavioural Science for Food Loss and Waste. Winner of LUBS 2017-18 Partnership Award – Best Feedback Nominee for LUBS Partnership Awards (2018, 2019) in Positive Impact, Inspirational Teaching, and Best Feedback She supervises several postgraduate researchers and contributes to teaching in management decision-making, risk perception, and research methods. She is also a member of the UKRI ESRC Peer Review College and professional societies including the Society for Risk Analysis and the European Citizen Science Association.
