Dr. Emily Danvers is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Education at the University of Sussex’s School of Education and Social Work. She serves as Course Leader for the PGCert in Higher Education and teaches on the MA in Education and BA in Childhood and Youth Studies. Her work spans pedagogy, inclusion, and critical theory in higher education. PhD in Education (University of Sussex, 2016) PGCert in Social Science Research Methods (University of Sussex, 2015) PGCert in Post-Compulsory Education and Training (Cardiff Metropolitan University, 2009) MA and BA in History (Cardiff University) Her research focuses on everyday exclusions in higher education, particularly for marginalized groups such as Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller (GRT) communities. Current projects explore decolonizing curricula for GRT communities, classroom signage as pedagogic values, and home as an emerging learning landscape post-COVID. Key publications include critiques of neoliberal education’s impact on critical thinking, studies on GRT student inclusion, and analyses of international doctoral writing groups. She has secured grants such as the Society for Research into Higher Education’s Prevent/ing Criticality grant (2018–2020). Senior Fellowship, Advance HE (2017) Newer Researcher Award, Society for Research in Higher Education (2018–2019) She supervises research degrees on topics like prison education and foundation year experiences. Professional roles include External Examiner for the University of Westminster, SRHE Network Convenor, and editorial board member of the Journal of Praxis in Higher Education. She previously chaired the Athena Swan EDI lead (2021–2024) and co-directed the Centre for Higher Education and Equity Research (2016–2019).
