Dr. Frank Sensfuß is the Head of the Department of Energy Policy and Energy Markets at the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI since October 2023. Previously, he served as Coordinator of the Business Unit Electricity Markets and Infrastructures (until February 2025) and Deputy Head of the Competence Center Energy Policy and Energy Markets (2019–2023). He holds a PhD in Economics (Dr. rer. pol.) from the University of Karlsruhe (2007), with earlier studies in Energy and Environmental Management at the University of Flensburg and Export Engineering at the University of Southern Denmark. His research focuses on renewable energy systems, energy policy modeling, and the integration of renewables into electricity markets. Key areas include agent-based simulation platforms, market design for decarbonization, and hydrogen infrastructure planning. He has led over 30 projects addressing energy transition challenges, including EEG evaluations, hydrogen roadmaps, and cross-border energy cooperation scenarios. Publications emphasize quantitative analyses of energy systems, policy impacts, and technological pathways. Notable works include studies on capacity markets in Austria, hydrogen demand infrastructure, and geospatial assessments of renewable potential in Mongolia. His work bridges technical modeling with policy advice, contributing to EU and German energy strategy development. Frank Sensfuß collaborates with international institutions like the German Academy of Technical Sciences (acatech) and has advised on policy frameworks such as the Renewable Energy Act (EEG). His interdisciplinary approach integrates economic, technical, and regulatory dimensions to advance sustainable energy transitions.
