Prof. Mohsen Zare is a Professor of Soil Biophysics and Environmental Systems at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), affiliated with the TUM School of Life Sciences. His research focuses on soil-root interface processes, particularly how soil physical properties influence plant and microbial life. He holds a PhD in Soil and Plant Hydrology (2013, Georg-August University of Göttingen) and has held academic positions including a postdoc at Göttingen (2013–2017), academic lecturer at the University of Bayreuth (2017–2022), and his current role at TUM since 2022.
Research interests include soil health, rhizosphere biophysics, plant-microbe interactions, and digital twin approaches for soil-plant systems. Key projects involve mucilage-driven nutrient diffusion, biochar impacts on soil hydraulics, and hydraulic orchestration in agroecosystems. Awards include a 2019 Early Career nomination and a 2009 German IPSWat doctoral scholarship.
Teaching emphasizes hands-on experimentation in soil biophysics, with courses linking theory to sustainable soil management practices. His lab investigates advanced imaging (neutron radiography, X-ray CT) and mechanistic modeling to understand root water uptake and nutrient transport dynamics. Current initiatives bridge soil physics with climate-smart agriculture, aiming to enhance soil resilience under environmental stressors.
Collaborations include the ProPollSoil and Hydraulic Orchestra projects, focusing on rhizosphere engineering and precision agriculture. Research infrastructure includes state-of-the-art facilities for soil hydraulics analysis and rhizosphere visualization.
