Sanju Velani is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of York (since 2008) and an Adjunct Professor at TIFR Mumbai (since 2015). He holds a BA (1988) and DPhil (1991) from the University of York. His research focuses on Number Theory, Dynamical Systems, and Discrete Groups, with contributions to Diophantine approximation, fractal geometry, and ergodic theory. He has led major grants, including an EPSRC Programme Grant (2012–2018) and an INTAS Network (2004–2007). Velani has supervised 12 PhD students and held significant roles such as Head of Pure Mathematics (2009–2014), Chair of the Departmental Research Committee (2010–2014), and Chair of the Faculty Promotions Panel (2021–present). His academic career includes fellowships like the Royal Society European Fellowship (1992–1993) and Royal Society University Research Fellowship (1998–2006). He is a member of the EPSRC Expert Group, University Senate, and various departmental committees. Velani’s work bridges pure mathematics and applications, such as contributions to wireless communications through metric number theory. Key research projects involve metric Diophantine approximation on manifolds, shrinking target problems, and the interplay between dynamical systems and fractal geometry. His publications span over 60 articles, exploring topics like the Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture, Borel-Cantelli lemmas, and Hausdorff measure theory. Velani collaborates internationally, leading workshops and serving on editorial boards.
