Lisa Sabbahy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology, Egyptology and Anthropology at The American University in Cairo (AUC), where she has taught Egyptology since 2001. Previously, she taught at the Cairo Center of the University of Maryland and the University of California at Berkeley. She earned her PhD in Egyptian archaeology from the University of Toronto. Her research interests span multiple specialized areas of Egyptology including queens of the Old and Middle Kingdoms, disease in ancient Egypt, anthropoid clay coffins, the position and status of ancient Egyptian women, chariot use in the New Kingdom, griffins in ancient Egyptian art, and the iconography of the god Nefertum. Her publications demonstrate interdisciplinary expertise bridging archaeology, medical history, art history, and gender studies. Professor Sabbahy's scholarly output shows a consistent trajectory from 2017-2021 with publications ranging from specialized journal articles to comprehensive reference works. Her work demonstrates particular strength in paleopathology, royal iconography, women's studies, and the intersection of art history with cultural practices in ancient Egypt. She has produced both focused research articles and broader reference works including encyclopedias that serve as valuable resources for students and scholars. At AUC, Sabbahy has directed the MA program in Egyptology and Coptology for nine years and has held significant university service roles including service on the faculty senate (2013-2015), participation in the senate executive committee (2014-2015), and membership on the strategic initiatives task force during Spring 2015 and Spring 2017 semesters. She regularly teaches courses on Egyptian history, art and architecture across multiple periods, archaeological methodology, material culture, and research design.
