Dr. Jennifer Schacker is a Professor at the School of Theatre, English, and Creative Writing within the College of Arts at the University of Guelph. Her research explores the intersection of fairy tales, cultural studies, and performance theory, with a focus on French fairy tales in 19th-century British pantomime. Supported by a SSHRC grant (2003–2007), her work examines how these tales evolved into bawdy, slapstick Christmas pantomimes. She has published extensively in journals like Journal of American Folklore and Marvels and Tales, and is completing a book titled Cross-Dressed Tales: Fairy Tales and the British Pantomime Tradition.
Her interdisciplinary approach bridges folklore, anthropology, and children's literature. She also studies contemporary craft/DIY movements, particularly the role of digital technologies in modern quilting. Dr. Schacker teaches undergraduate and graduate students, emphasizing critical practices and material culture theory. Her research grants and publications reflect a commitment to exploring how cultural narratives shape identity and tradition.
Recent projects include analyzing national narratives in folklore collections and investigating the socio-cultural dimensions of Victorian print cultures. She actively contributes to academic dialogues through reviews and collaborative studies, maintaining a vibrant presence in both traditional and emerging research areas.
