Yasmine Khayyat is an Associate Professor in the Department of Arabic Language and Literature at Rutgers University. She holds a Ph.D. in Arabic Literature and Comparative Literature from Columbia University, an M.A. in Comparative Literature from SOAS, and a B.A. in English Literature from the American University of Beirut (AUB). Her research focuses on contemporary Arabic literature, cultural memory studies, and the intersection of classical Arabic poetry with modern Lebanese cultural production.
Her current book project, Memory in Ruins: The Poetics of Aṭlāl in Lebanese Wartime and Postwar Cultural Production, examines the figuration of ruins in literature and memorial sites in South Lebanon. She previously taught at the Lebanese American University (LAU) and New York University (NYU), offering courses on war and literature in the Arab world, and literary memory.
Her scholarly works explore themes of war, memory, and postcolonial discourse. Recent articles include studies on Lebanon’s civil war legacy, postcolonial autobiographical forms, and the creaturely theory in Arabic women’s writing. Her work bridges literary analysis with historical and political contexts, emphasizing cultural resilience and identity formation.
Khayyat’s research has been supported by interdisciplinary collaborations, including her participation in Columbia University’s Engendering Archives Working Group. She has no listed scientific awards but is an active contributor to Middle Eastern literary studies through her publications and teaching.
