Dr. Heewon Seo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Animal and Avian Sciences at the University of Maryland, College Park. His research focuses on uterine and placental biology, particularly the cellular and molecular interactions during implantation and placentation in livestock (pigs, sheep, cows) to inform clinical strategies for human and animal reproductive health. He holds a Ph.D. from Yonsei University, South Korea, and has held prior positions at Texas A&M University as a Research Assistant Professor and Postdoctoral Researcher. Education: Ph.D., Yonsei University, 2012 M.S., Yonsei University, 2007 B.S., Yonsei University, 2005 Research interests emphasize metabolic pathways (e.g., creatine, serine, glutaminolysis) supporting pregnancy, microbiome roles in reproductive tissues, and interferon-mediated communication between conceptuses and uterus. His work bridges animal models (porcine, ovine) to uncover universal mechanisms in implantation, with implications for fertility and pregnancy loss. Teaching includes co-instructing ANSC446/447: Physiology of Mammalian Reproduction . Recent studies highlight the role of SPARC/SPP1 in placental development, microbiome dynamics in gestation, and integrin-mediated adhesion in placentation. Publications span over 50 peer-reviewed articles, focusing on placental metabolism, gene expression regulation, and comparative reproductive biology.
