Matilde Casas Parada is a Professor in the Department of Physical Chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), affiliated with the Materials Institute (iMATUS) and leading the BIOINTERFAR research group focused on physical chemistry of surfaces, biointerfaces, and pharmaceutical colloidal systems. She currently serves as Secretary of the Faculty of Pharmacy and has coordinated the BIOINTERFAR group since 2020. She earned her Doctorate from USC in 1990 with a thesis on silicic acid interactions with lipid monolayers, providing molecular insights into silicosis mechanisms through lysosomal membrane damage analysis. Her research spans interfacial characterization of peptides, proteins, drugs, surfactants, and synthetic polymers interacting with cell membrane models to elucidate drug mechanisms and toxicity. Professor Casas pioneered Langmuir monolayers and Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) for surfactant phase studies and drug delivery system optimization. Since 2012, her work expanded to nanostructured systems, with recent focus on biocompatible block copolymer micelles and thermodynamic studies of biointerfaces for improving drug administration in low-bioavailability routes, emphasizing surface physicochemistry's role in pharmaceutical efficacy. Throughout her career, she has held management positions within the department and faculty while participating in extensive research projects. Her work has been disseminated through national and international conference presentations, contributing foundational knowledge to membrane lipid physics in pathology and pharmacotherapy. She actively leads the BIOINTERFAR group within USC's Materials Institute (iMATUS), where her team investigates biointerface properties for pharmaceutical applications through air/water interface studies and molecular interaction analyses.
