Menahem Segal is the Harry and Leona Levine Professor of Neuroscience at the Department of Neurobiology, Faculty of Biology, The Weizmann Institute. He has held prestigious positions such as President of the Israeli Society for Neuroscience (2000-2002) and Head of the Benoziyo Center for Neurological Diseases (2004-2009). His research focuses on the neuronal basis of long-term memory, particularly memory deterioration in Alzheimer's disease and developmental disorders, using transgenic mice and hippocampal slice electrophysiology. Education B.A., Bar-Ilan University, 1968 M.A., Bar-Ilan University, 1970 Ph.D. in Biology, California Institute of Technology, 1972 Postdoctoral training at NIMH/NIH, 1974 Segal's work investigates synaptic modifications in cultured neurons, emphasizing dendritic spine plasticity and calcium signaling. He pioneered techniques like flash photolysis of caged molecules to study localized molecular impacts on neuronal activity. His administrative roles include founding the Center for Neuroscience (1983-1984, 1987-1991) and leading institutional ethics committees. Scientific Awards EDAB Foundation Academia Europaea Segal has served on editorial boards as Section Editor for Neuroscience and board member for journals including Journal of Neuroscience Methods and Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience . His research combines behavioral studies, electrophysiology, and advanced imaging to decode memory mechanisms.
