Dr. João P. Pereira is an Associate Professor of Immunobiology at Yale University, affiliated with the Yale Cancer Center and Yale Stem Cell Center. He holds academic roles in the Yale School of Medicine and leads the Pereira Lab, focusing on B lymphocyte development, hematopoietic stem cell niches, and immune cell migration. His research explores how mesenchymal stem cells and cytokines regulate blood cell formation and immune responses. Education: BSc in Microbiology (Universidade Católica Portuguesa, 1996), MSc in Biotechnology (DeMontfort University, 1997), PhD in Immunology (Universidade do Porto, 2004) with postdoctoral training at UCSF under Dr. Jason Cyster. Research Interests: Dr. Pereira’s work centers on three main areas: 1) Bone marrow stem cell niches and their role in hematopoiesis and plasma cell maintenance. 2) B cell development dynamics in the bone marrow, particularly interactions between B cell precursors and mesenchymal progenitors. 3) Chemoattractant signaling in B cell homeostasis, using pertussis toxin to study receptor-mediated effects. Publications: Recent work includes studies on fetal liver hematopoietic niches (2025), B lymphopoiesis regulation (2024), and leukemic cell-mesenchymal interactions (2023). His research spans immunology, stem cell biology, and inflammatory pathways. Labs/Teams: The Pereira Lab investigates B lymphocyte biology and immune cell migration using advanced microscopy and genetic tools. Collaborations include work with Richard Flavell, Akiko Iwasaki, and David Hafler on projects involving immunological pathways and disease models.
