Professor Allison Pettit is a leading academic at The University of Queensland (UQ), serving as Director of the Mater Research Institute - UQ and leading the Bones and Immunology Research Group. Her roles include Director of Biomedical Research at Mater Research and affiliation with the Centre for Extracellular Vesicle Nanomedicine. She holds a Bachelor (Honours) of Science (Advanced) from Griffith University and a Doctor of Philosophy from UQ.
Her research focuses on immunology, rheumatology, cancer biology, haematology, and bone biology. Key discoveries include the identification of osteal macrophages (osteomacs) and their roles in bone formation, bone regeneration, and hematopoietic stem cell niches. She has pioneered studies on macrophage fragmentation in single-cell analyses, impacting research methodologies.
Professor Pettit’s work addresses bone fracture healing, osteoporosis, and the effects of cancer therapies on bone marrow. She has received awards such as the 2019 UQ Faculty of Medicine Leader of the Year and is a Fellow of the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research.
Her research impacts span translational medicine, including collaborations with pharmaceutical companies. She actively supervises PhD candidates, with notable students like Dr. Lena Batoon and Dr. Alexander. Her grants include NHMRC and ARC funding for projects on macrophage biology and hematopoietic stem cell niches.
