Professor Michael Miller is a faculty member in the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and serves as Dean of Undergraduate Education. He earned his BA in Psychology from San Francisco State University (1994) and Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience from Dartmouth College (1998). As vice director of the Sage Center for the Study of the Mind and editor of The Year in Cognitive Neuroscience , he leads initiatives in cognitive neuroscience research. Key themes include criterion shifting in recognition memory, functional brain network reorganization, and the role of hormones in cognition. His lab has contributed to understanding the neural basis of metacognitive confidence, adaptive decision-making, and the interplay between stress and cognitive control. Recent publications emphasize optimizing neurostimulation methods (tDCS), callosotomy effects, and decision criterion dynamics. The Miller Memory Lab collaborates with institutions like Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and participates in multidisciplinary projects such as the Rapid Adaptive Decision-making and Recovery from Stress (RADARS) grant through the Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies.
