Mikkel Fugl Eskjær is an Associate Professor at the Department of Communication and Psychology within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Aalborg University's Copenhagen campus. With a PhD in Film Studies from the University of Copenhagen, he has established himself as a leading researcher in environmental communication with an extensive publication record spanning from 1997 to the present. His research focuses on mediated communication in relation to the environment and the more-than-human world, covering climate change journalism, media coverage of environmental conflicts, environmental justice, climate activism, resilience, sustainability, and representations of ecological crises in popular culture. Working from a media sociological perspective, Eskjær employs both qualitative and quantitative methodologies alongside digital methods including automated content analysis, topic modeling, and sentiment analysis. His additional research fields encompass international communication, mediatization theory, and media sociology. Eskjær's recent scholarly output demonstrates a consistent trajectory toward increasingly sophisticated methodological approaches while maintaining strong theoretical grounding. His work shows particular attention to textual complexity in climate communication, sustainable aviation fuels representation, and typologies of environmental conflicts. This research trajectory reflects the evolving nature of environmental communication as a field, incorporating both traditional media sociology frameworks and cutting-edge digital humanities techniques. He has co-authored two books and co-edited three anthologies, contributing significantly to the scholarly literature in environmental communication. Eskjær is a founding member of the International Environmental Communication Association (IECA) and currently serves as Chair of the Science and Environment Section of ECREA (2024-26). His grant portfolio includes multiple ongoing projects such as 'Climate communication through the ages' (2022-2027), 'EH: Cluster: Environmental Humanities' (2021-present), 'SAFE: Sustainable Aviation Fuels' (2024-2025), 'Mapping Youth Activists and their (media) experience' (2019-present), and 'Exploring Environmental Care Work(ers)' (2023-2024). These projects demonstrate his leadership in interdisciplinary environmental communication research with practical implications for sustainability efforts. Eskjær maintains an extensive international research network, having served as a visiting scholar at NYU (2001-03), the Danish Institute in Damascus (2007-10), Dhaka University, Bangladesh (2014-15), and University of Ottawa (2020-24). His work contributes to multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to climate action and sustainable communities.
