Professor Xin Zhang, Chair in Control and Power Systems at the University of Sheffield, leads interdisciplinary research in power systems, cybersecurity, and transport electrification. He heads the Control and Power Systems Laboratory (CAPS Lab), focusing on digital twins, grid resilience, and cyber-physical integration.
His research spans:
- Cyber-physical power systems modeling and co-simulation
- Transport electrification (electric vehicles/aircraft and grid integration)
- Grid flexibility through multiscale modeling
- Renewable energy and hydrogen systems
- Real-time digital simulation platforms
Major awards include:
- UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship (£1.5m) for digital energy systems
- EPSRC New Investigator Award (£400k) for aviation-to-grid research
- Royal Society International Exchanges Grant (£12k) for energy storage communities
- DSTL grant (£100k) for human resilience in energy cybersecurity
As an IEEE Senior Member and associate editor for multiple journals, he contributes to smart grid standards and real-time simulation platforms. His lab develops co-simulation tools integrating cyber and physical components at various time scales.
