Hannah Dyer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Child and Youth Studies at Brock University, located within the Faculty of Social Sciences. She holds a PhD from the University of Toronto and specializes in cultural theory of childhood, focusing on intersections of art, critical theory, and psychoanalysis. Her work examines how childhood aesthetics reshape political, historical, and social narratives, particularly around belonging and vulnerability. Education: PhD in Cultural Theory from the University of Toronto Research Interests: Dyer’s scholarship centers on critical theories of childhood, queer and gender studies, children’s art and aesthetics, trauma studies, memory narratives, and film/visual studies. She critically analyzes themes of racialization, diaspora, and sound studies, emphasizing decolonial and intersectional approaches. Her current projects explore the sonic dimensions of queer childhood and the role of children’s art in understanding kinship dynamics. Grants and Collaborations: She leads an SSHRC-funded project investigating queer/trans kinship through children’s art (with Julia Sinclair-Palm). She is also a co-investigator on another SSHRC grant examining trigger warnings in Canadian classrooms (with Michelle Miller and Natalie Kouri-Towe). Her research supervision spans queer theory, trans childhoods, disability studies, and sound studies. Presentations and Outreach: Dyer has presented widely, including talks at the American Studies Association (2018–2019), University of Pittsburgh (2018), and International Congress on Gender Studies (2016). Her work bridges academia and activism, addressing urgent social issues through interdisciplinary lenses.
