Dr. Richard O’Shea is a Lecturer in Sustainability in Enterprise at the School of Engineering, University College Cork (UCC). He is affiliated with MaREI, the SFI-funded Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine Research. His expertise spans biomethane production, resource assessments, and techno-economic analysis, with a focus on decarbonizing industries like distilleries and shipping. Dr. O’Shea holds a PhD in Energy Engineering (2018) and has secured over €900k in research funding since 2018. His work integrates multi-criteria decision analysis and compromise programming to balance environmental and economic outcomes. Education: BE in Civil Engineering (1989), MEngSc in Environmental Engineering (1992), PhD in Engineering (2003) Research Focus: Renewable gaseous fuels, anaerobic digestion, circular economy systems Funding: €900k+ secured from 2018–2021 Publications: Over 30 peer-reviewed articles, including studies in Applied Energy and Renewable Energy His research emphasizes sustainable fuel production, lifecycle assessments, and the application of analytical hierarchy processes. Recent work explores biogas integration with power-to-X technologies, decarbonization pathways for deep-sea shipping, and whiskey distillery waste valorization. Dr. O’Shea also advises on policy frameworks for renewable gas industries and contributes to global sustainability initiatives. Key projects include designing biogas pipelines, optimizing biochar-enhanced anaerobic digestion, and assessing CO₂ bioconversion via microbial electrosynthesis. His interdisciplinary approach bridges engineering, environmental science, and policy to advance clean energy solutions.
