Ståle Navrud

Ståle Navrud is a Professor in the Department of Economics and Business at the School of Economics and Business, Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU). He holds a Dr. Scient. (Ph.D) in Environmental and Resource Economics from NMBU and has been a visiting researcher and Fulbright Scholar at UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, and the University of New Mexico. His work focuses on economic valuation, cost-benefit analysis, and policy applications in environmental and resource economics.

His research interests include:

• Cost-benefit analysis of environmental policies
• Economic valuation of ecosystem services (terrestrial, aquatic, marine)
• Biodiversity and climate change economics
• Externalities from transport and renewable energy
• Health economics and environmental impacts
• Stated preference methods and value transfer

Navrud’s recent publications (2023–2025) reveal a strong focus on societal trade-offs in environmental management, including avalanche risk, wind energy acceptance, invasive species, and lithium mining impacts. His work often integrates interdisciplinary perspectives and applies advanced valuation techniques to real-world policy questions. He has contributed to major international assessments such as the IPCC AR5 and IPBES, and serves on ISO committees for environmental management and circular economy standards.

His scientific awards include the Best Paper Award in Samfunnsøkonomen (2022/2023). He has collaborated extensively with researchers across Europe, Africa, and Asia, and has led or participated in numerous EU-funded projects. His teaching includes courses in environmental and resource economics, cost-benefit analysis, and climate economics.

He is actively involved in research projects such as MarES, WINDLAND, VALUECHANGE, COAST-BENEFIT, LandValUse, LANDWELL, SeaSoil, and SEA-CYCLE, focusing on marine, land, and climate-related economic valuation.
