Jacques de Werra is a full professor of the law of obligations and intellectual property law at the Faculty of Law, University of Geneva, where he also directs the Digital Law Center established in 2020. He previously served as Vice-Rector of the University (2015–2019), overseeing scientific information, technology transfer, and the 'Digital University' initiative. He has held visiting professorships at Stanford, Columbia, Paris 2, and other leading institutions and was a Faculty Fellow at Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center (2012–2014). His research centers on contract law, intellectual property, digital law, and alternative dispute resolution. He leads the Swiss Contract Law (SCL) project, contributes annually to Le Journal des Tribunaux , and participated in the Swiss National Science Foundation’s CO 2020 project to recast the general part of the Code of Obligations. His scholarly work explores AI transparency, FRAND licensing, trade secrets, sports IP, and digital governance. He has published extensively in journals such as Journal of Intellectual Property Law & Practice , WIPO Magazine , and Harvard Journal of Law & Technology , and edits the p®opriété intelle©tuelle book series. His recent publications reflect a strong focus on digital contracts, IP in the context of AI and big data, arbitration of technology disputes, and legal responses to public health crises. These works demonstrate a consistent engagement with the intersection of law, technology, and global policy. De Werra serves on the editorial boards of revue sic! , Jusletter , and the Cahiers de propriété intellectuelle (Canada), and is a French-speaking editor of Jusletter . He is a member of professional bodies including the Licensing Executives Society (LES), the International Literary and Artistic Association (ALAI), ATRIP, and the Swiss Arbitration Association (ASA). He is on WIPO’s list of experts for domain name dispute resolution. He mentors doctoral candidates and has supervised several PhD theses in IP and contract law. He coordinates the Digital Law Summer School and organizes the annual Intellectual Property Law Day. He has received research funding from the Swiss National Science Foundation and led institutional projects on digital strategy and data governance. De Werra is actively involved in research centers and training programs in intellectual property, ICT law, and digital governance, both within and beyond the University of Geneva. He has contributed to policy reports for the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property and co-authored authoritative commentaries on Swiss IP law.
