Zarena Aslami is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at Michigan State University, specializing in 19th-century British literature and culture. Her research focuses on empire studies, feminist theory, disability studies, and global diasporic narratives. She holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Chicago and a B.A. from Duke University.
Her work examines how Victorian literature engaged with state power, colonialism, and gender dynamics. Notable publications include The Dream Life of Citizens: Late Victorian Novels and the Fantasy of the State (2012) and her current project Sovereign Anxieties: Victorian Afghanistan and the Literatures of Empire, analyzing British perceptions of Afghanistan through military memoirs, photographs, and fiction.
Aslami’s courses include studies on Victorian race, disability theory, and feminist analyses of motherhood. Her articles address topics like Afghan sovereignty in imperial discourse, maternal labor, and disability in Victorian narratives.
