Yvonne Vercoulen is an Associate Professor at the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC Utrecht), leading the Vercoulen Lab within the Center for Molecular Medicine. Her research focuses on immune mechanisms in cancer, chronic inflammation, and primary immunodeficiencies, with an emphasis on spatial omics technologies like mass cytometry (CyTOF) and the development of tools such as MATISSE for single-cell spatial analysis.
Her work bridges fundamental and clinical immunology, exploring topics like colitis-associated cancer, immune checkpoint therapy, and signal transduction errors in patients with primary immunodeficiencies. She collaborates extensively with clinical and translational teams and is a member of the Utrecht Young Academy.
Recent publications highlight her lab's advancements in spatial biology, including studies on:
- Epigenetic regulation in cancer stemness
- Immune-epithelial crosstalk in IBD
- T cell exhaustion in colorectal cancer
- Hepatoblastoma immunology
- Autoimmune mechanisms in genetic disorders
Key scientific awards include the Gastrostart award (NVGE). Her lab is funded by organizations such as KWF Kankerbestrijding, NWO-gravitation program, and industry partners like Bristol Myers Squibb. Former and current lab members include researchers at institutions like Hubrecht Institute and ErasmusMC.
