Yvette Hamilton is a Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Art at Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney. She holds a BFA from UNSW, an MFA, and a PhD in Art History from the University of Sydney. Her interdisciplinary practice explores the ontological paradoxes of photography, material experimentation, and the interplay between light, science, and art.
Research focuses include contemporary photographic practices, expanded techniques, and the history of photography. Notable exhibitions include solo shows at Mosman Art Gallery and Blue Mountains Cultural Centre, alongside international participation in events like the Pingyao International Festival of Photography.
Recipient of the 2024 AAANZ PhD Prize and multiple grants including the John Anthony Gilbert Research Grant (2023), her work bridges art and science through projects like 'Things I Can't See from Places I Can't Be', merging AI with traditional salt printing. Residencies include Linden Observatory and Woodford Academy. Awards include finalist positions in the Blake Prize and Josephine Ulrick & Winn Schubert Photo Award.
Her teaching spans UNSW, UTS, and the University of Sydney, while her research explores themes like the 1874 Transit of Venus and Elizabeth Fulhame's contributions to photographic chemistry. Collaborations include Running Dog arts publication and exhibitions addressing visibility, perception, and materiality.
