Yutaka Arai is a Professor of Law and Deputy-Director in Law programmes at the Brussels School of International Studies (BSIS), University of Kent. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge under Prof James Crawford. His research focuses on International Humanitarian Law, Human Rights Law, and the European Convention on Human Rights. He has authored influential books like The Law of Occupation and has contributed to major legal commentaries.
Teaching and supervision: He teaches postgraduates at BSIS in Law of Armed Conflict, International Criminal Law, and Human Rights. He has supervised over seven PhD candidates, including Dr. Antonios Stylianou and Dr. Maite van Regenmorter, who have published their theses as books. Currently supervising Ms Carina Lamont and Mr Matthew Wetherill.
Publications: Over 65 articles and books, including works in Israel Yearbook on Human Rights and Journal of Conflict and Security Law. His research analyzes topics like occupation law, war crimes, and judicial doctrines under ECHR.
Notable contributions: His work on the margin of appreciation doctrine and proportionality has been cited in international arbitration and court cases. He critiques legal frameworks and their application in modern conflicts, emphasizing interplay between humanitarian and human rights law.
