Yuri Pettinicchi serves as Deputy Director of the Generations and Gender Programme (GGP) at the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI). With a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Venice (2012), he brings 15+ years of progressive experience in survey research, including 9 years with the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). His expertise spans household finance, expectation formation, economics of ageing, and survey methodology.
Pettinicchi earned his doctorate from the University of Venice in 2012, building on prior academic work at Goethe University Frankfurt and Ca' Foscari University of Venice. His research career has focused on survey methodology and economic behavior, particularly in the context of ageing populations across Europe.
His research examines how individuals form expectations about their financial futures and how these expectations influence consumption decisions. A key contribution is his work on overextrapolation in economic expectations, demonstrating how households and firms tend to overestimate the persistence of recent trends in their financial situations. His methodological expertise supports robust data collection for studying ageing populations across Europe, with significant contributions to large-scale cross-national surveys like SHARE.
Pettinicchi's publications demonstrate a consistent focus on expectation formation and household finance, bridging economics, behavioral science, and survey methodology. His work reveals systematic biases in expectation formation, particularly overextrapolation of recent experiences, and examines the economic consequences of these biases. His methodological contributions to surveys provide valuable infrastructure for studying ageing populations across Europe.
As a task leader in EU-funded projects including SERISS and SSHOC, Pettinicchi has secured research support from the Research Center SAFE (funded by the State of Hessen initiative LOEWE) and the 7.FP COFUND Goethe International Postdoc Programme (GO-IN, No. 291776). His work has practical implications for economic policy and survey design.
Leading the GGP team at NIDI, Pettinicchi collaborates extensively with the SHARE Berlin Institute and the Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy. His work involves managing complex international research infrastructures that collect longitudinal data on health, ageing, and retirement across Europe.
