Yumi Shiojima is a Study Abroad Adviser and Teaching Professor of Japanese Language at Northwestern University, affiliated with the Department of Japanese Language and Culture within the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. She holds an M.S.Ed. from the University of Pennsylvania. Her roles include curriculum development, instructional coordination, and teaching at all levels of Japanese language education, particularly emphasizing writing-focused courses in the fourth-year curriculum.
Research interests focus on second language writing pedagogy, study abroad program design, and teacher professional development. She co-authored the IES Abroad MAP for Language & Intercultural Communication (2011), a key resource for assessing language proficiency in study abroad contexts. Shiojima has held leadership roles, including Co-Chair of the Council on Language Instruction at Northwestern (2008–2011), which oversees language pedagogy and instructor development.
She is a Fellow at the International Studies Residential College, recognized with the 2019–2020 T. William Heyck Award for her contributions to residential college education. Her career spans institutions such as Rhodes College, the Japanese School at Middlebury College, and the University of Missouri’s Language, Culture, and Performing Arts Program in Japan.
Awards highlight her teaching excellence and institutional service, including the 2010–2011 Weinberg College Distinguished Teaching Award.
