Yumi Foster is a Senior Lecturer in Japanese at Wichita State University (WSU), affiliated with the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures within the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She holds an MA in Education from WSU and a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Tokyo Gakugei University. With over two decades of experience, Foster has taught Japanese language courses at various institutions, including Wichita State University since 1999, where she initiated and developed the Japanese program with support from the Japan Foundation.
Her educational background includes a BA from Tokyo Gakugei University and an MA from WSU. She has contributed to the Asian Studies Certificate Program at WSU, presenting courses on Japanese philosophy, film, and women's literature. Foster has also presented at academic conferences, including the Annual Conference of the Japan Studies Association (2000) and workshops for the Kansas World Language Association.
Foster actively participates in professional organizations such as the Association of Asian Studies, American Association of Teachers of Japanese, and Kansas World Language Association. She has served on committees like the World Language Advisory Council and organized Japanese cultural events in Kansas. Her work has enabled over 30 students to study or teach in Japan through study-abroad and JET programs.
Her career highlights include securing grants to establish WSU’s Japanese program, developing comprehensive language curricula, and fostering international educational collaborations. Foster’s global experiences include visits to China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, New Zealand, and England.
