Yulin Lu is a Postdoctoral Fellow and Researcher in History of Religions at Lund University's Centre for Theology and Religious Studies (CTR), Faculty of Humanities and Theology. Based in Lund, Sweden, Lu conducts interdisciplinary research at the intersection of religious studies, behavioral science, and computational methods.
Lu's research focuses on Buddhism's relationship with science, particularly through empirical studies of Shaolin monks and Buddhist education systems in Hong Kong. Using methodologies including participant observation and machine learning, Lu investigates charisma dynamics, monastic perceptions of scientific compatibility, and religious education frameworks. Key research areas include monastic studies, religion-science dialogue, and behavioral analysis of religious concepts.
Analysis of Lu's recent publications reveals a cohesive trajectory examining how Buddhist communities navigate modernity through science engagement. The work demonstrates methodological innovation by combining traditional religious studies with computational social science, particularly in analyzing viral religious concepts and institutional responses to scientific paradigms within Asian religious contexts.
Lu currently leads the active research project "Life Education in Secondary Buddhist Schools of Hong Kong – Contextualizing Buddhist engagement in public education in Greater China through field research" (2024-2026) as Principal Investigator, collaborating with researchers from Lund University on field-based studies of Buddhist educational integration in public schooling systems.
