His research explores how prayer is perceived within an evolution-affirming theological context, contributing to anthologies like Darwin and Our Lord (2009) and participating in interdisciplinary symposia on Darwin, theology, and environmental ethics. He has also edited thematic issues on evolutionary science and religion, emphasizing the 'third task' of universities in societal engagement.
Hammar's publications span paleoclimatology, tephrochronology, and environmental ethics, with recent work analyzing iron dynamics in boreal lakes, deglaciation history, and seasonal climate variability using biogenic carbonates. His research integrates theology with empirical studies of climate change, volcanic impacts, and ecosystem responses.
He has held leadership roles in several committees, including chairing the advisory committee for the Swedish Theological Institute in Jerusalem and participating in ethical councils. His interdisciplinary approach bridges theological discourse with environmental science, particularly in understanding climate change's implications for religion and ethics.
